Etymology

Chrysoblephus - golden eyed
laticeps - broad head
Red Roman - An Old Dutch name meaning - die rooi man, a referance to its sex change at a certain age and size, as well as to its body colour.

Features

The Roman is reddish - orange in colour, with a characteristic white saddle on the back and a white patch on the gill cover. They have a distinguishing bluish - purple line that runs over the snout, connecting the eyes.

Ecology

Juveniles occurs around inshore reefs, but adults appears to be benthic carnivores that prey on bottom organisms like, invertebrates, a variety of crustaceans, sea urchins and polycheate worms.

Distribution

Available from Cape Point to Port St John's, where it's caught with hand - lines from the vessels.

Regulation

Minimum legal size - 30cm in length
Bag limit for recreational fishing - 2 per person.
