Etymology

Coryphaena - helmet shaped head
hippurus - horsetail
Dolphinfish - A reference to their smooth dolphin like body.

Features

Dorado has a metallic blue - green colour on their back, with a white and golden colour from the middle to the belly.
Males have a bony crest on the high, square forehead presenting a blunt vertical profile, but with the female having a normal, gently sloped forehead.

Ecology

Occur in coastal waters to deep oceanic waters, where their main diet consists of zooplankton, small fish, squid and some planktonic organisms.

Distribution

Dorado has an extremely wide distribution which stretches from Skeleton coast all the way to Mozambique, especially in warm water currents, caught with hand - lines and long lines. This species prefer tropical and subtropical waters.

Bag limit for recreational fishing - 10 per person.
