Etymology

Makaira - Derived from the Greek word machaira, which means 'a short sword'
nigricans -A Latin word for becoming black.

Features

This fish are characterized by an elongated body, a large pointed dorsal fin, and a sharp rounded spear extending from the snout. The body appears blue - black on top with a silvery, white underside. It has about fifteen rows of pale, cobalt - coloured stripes, each of which has dots or thin bars, located on both sides of the fish.

Ecology

Blue Marlins are highly migratory species that inhabits the tropical offshore waters of the ocean, and their diet includes a variety of pelagic fish, octopus and squid. The Marlin family are incredibly fast swimmers, reaching speeds of about 110km per hour. They catch their prey by using their sharp spears to slash through dense schools.

Distribution

Occur from Skeleton Coast to Cape Point, where they are caught with long - lines and for recreational purposes, rods and hand - reels are used.
