Etymology

Pterogymnus - Meaning, naked wing, a reference to the scale less patch on the pre - operculum
laniarius - Longitudinal stripes
The name Panga is derived from pangarang, a similar fish found in Malaya.

Features

Panga has an overall body coloration of a light metallic pink, with several blue - green longitudinal lines along its sides, and a white belly. Each jaw is lined out with 4 - 6 small canine teeth.

Size : 30 cm | Weight : 0.6 kg

Ecology

This species is known to inhabit reefs and sandy bottoms to depths of 150m, where they feed on crustaceans, squid, small fish species, and a variety of other invertebrates.

Distribution

Occur from Cape Point to Durban, where they are targeted by fishermen with hand - lines.
