Etymology

Argyrozona - silver animal
Carpenrer - An Old Dutch name for Kaapenaar, meaning 'of the Cape'.

Features

The silver fish is named according to its overall silvery body colouration, with a light shade of pink, reddish forehead and a white belly. The jaws are lined out with four long canine teeth in each, and several grinding teeth further back in the mouth.

Ecology

Occur offshore to depths of 200m. Silverfish are carnivorous and feeds on small fish, crab, crab larvae and squid.

Distribution

Silverfish occur from Saldanha Bay to Port St John's, where they are caught with hand - lines from the vessels.

Regulation

Minimum legal size - 35cm
Bag limit for recreational fishing - 4 per person.
