Etymology

Atractoscion - meaning spindle shaped
aequidens - uniform sized teeth
Geelbek is Dutch for yellow mouth, a reference to the bright yellow colour inside the mouth.

Features

Geelbek is an elongated fish with a bluish to coppery colouration on the back and white on the belly. This species are characterised by the bright yellow colour of the mouth and inner surface of the gill covers. The jaws have several rows of needle like teeth.

Ecology

Distribution

Occurs in great numbers from Skeleton coast to Umfolozi River, where they are caught with hand - lines from the vessel.

Regulation

Minimum legal size - 60cm
Bag limit for recreational fishing - 2 per person.
